The Symphonic Jazz Orchestra’s “Music in the Schools” program is wrapping up its month-long summer school classes marking a successful partnership with five LAUSD middle schools across Los Angeles. The SJO developed a tailored curriculum for the summer school program based on our “Music of the World” residency.
Building on this momentum, we’re expanding our educational offerings into year-round residencies for middle schools. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of social studies through music history, world history, geography, cultural diversity, social awareness, as well as the basics of rhythm, note reading, solfège and music appreciation.
As part of our expanded offerings, we’re also introducing a new assembly called “What is Jazz?” This interactive presentation takes students on a journey through jazz history, from its roots in Mississippi blues to the lively rhythms of New Orleans ragtime to modern sounds. With demonstrations from SJO musicians, students will explore the art of improvisation and discover jazz pioneers.
