A hostage suspect was wounded in a police officer-involved shooting in Culver City, officials said Friday. The Los Angeles Police Department received a domestic violence report involving a firearm about 8:40 p.m. Thursday at Robertson and Venice boulevards, according to spokesman Richard French.

“The officers arrived, and they did see a suspect, an adult man who was holding a gun to a woman,” stated Sgt. Kevin Lowe.  “As the first officer arrived, the woman attempted to break free, and the suspect’s gun went off in the struggle. The suspect and the victim were standing next to a vehicle where there were two children inside.”

Officers tried to detain the suspect, but the man fled on foot to Trader Joe’s at Ince and Culver boulevards where he was shot and wounded, and then taken into custody, according to Los Angeles police Pacific Division Sgt. Richard Parks. The suspect had a gunshot wound to his head.

The man was transported to the hospital in serious condition, but was upgraded to stable condition later Friday, authorities said.
