The last weekend, Sept. 21 and 22, 2024 saw some eyebrow raising emails sent to some CCUSD students; a fraudulent job offer from someone pretending to be a CCUSD employee.
These emails were not sent by the District.
In a letter to the community from School Superintendent Dr. Brian Lucas, he strongly objected, saying “the District would not send job offers to students requesting sensitive information, such as banking details. Upon discovering the incident, the IT Department immediately locked all CCUSD email accounts and engaged an outside cybersecurity firm to conduct a forensic analysis and assist in our investigation.”
While email and texting scams are common enough that most folks know to ignore them – or delete, block, report – the scam is that it comes from someone you could trust unthinkingly. This is where most people click in before they realize that they are a target.
Lucas assured the community that “Collectively, the team worked tirelessly throughout the weekend to complete multiple system-wide password resets. We also reached out to those students who received the message to warn them of its fraudulent nature. We urge all students and families to exercise caution when opening emails, especially those that ask for personal or financial information.”
Student emails remain closed as the District finalizes the network analysis.
