AVPA Java Gala – Gushing Right Over the Top (June 8 Be There)

There are some things that go on in Culver City that really are so unique, they are the envy of all of Los Angeles. If you attend AVPA performances, you know this academy turns out top-grade professional quality theater, dance, music and art without fail. What you might not realize is that they also turn out top-grade professionals, and June 8 is your final chance to see these remarkable students performing this year.

The annual Java Gala at the Kirk Douglas Theater this coming Saturday is both a showcase and a fundraiser for the program, and offers highlights of performances for the entire Academy. ‘Don’t miss it’ is simply too mild.

At the Java Galas I have attended over the last few years, I have heard some of the most wonderful musicians playing, seen more than a few heart-opening dance numbers, and gotten to taste theater that stayed with me in many ways. To be able to experience such talent is the reason that we go to the theater, the concert, or the gallery. To have it all here in one place is unique.

More than 250 students participate in AVPA, and as they leave our high school for the next chapter of their creative careers, they will take with them the portfolios, the audition pieces and the choreography that will allow them to begin in first place.

Sponsored by the Center Theater Group, Java Gala will be June 8 at the Kirk Douglas Theater. There will be a reception and silent auction from 6:30 to 8pm in the lobby, with music by the Jazz Combo and an Art Exhibit from the students who paint, photograph and sculpt. At 8 pm the show begins. Tickets are $40 in advance, $50 at the door, and $60 for premium reserved seating. Go to www.avpa.org. Go now.
