LOCALmotion – Jozelle Smith

The Culver City Garden Club will meet this Tuesday evening, June 4, at 7:00 p.m. at Star Education Center, 10117 Jefferson Blvd. Participants can bring their green thumb-related questions to the plant “Show, Tell & Ask” session following the presentation, “Workshop on Succulent Container Garden Creations.” CCGC member Louise Scholten will be the presenter, and after her demonstration everyone is invited to make their own creations – plants and soil will be provided (but please bring something in which to place your plants – be creative; toy trucks, hats, containers of any kind can work.) Refreshments will be served, but no plant raffle at this meeting – the Garden Club’s big show is coming up on June 22 and members are (or should be) busy grooming their entries! For more information visit www.culvercitygardenclub.org.

And what are you doing from 10:00 a.m. – noon this coming Tuesday, June 4 that’s so important? We’re pretty sure the Culver City Fire Department has something better: a free Hands-Only CPR training in honor of National CPR Week. This critical training takes place at two locations: Culver City Fire Station #1 at 9600 Culver Blvd. Culver City 90232, at Westfield (Fox Hills) Mall 6000 Sepulveda Blvd. CPR instructors will demonstrate the basics and proper techniques of Hands-Only CPR, and participants will have the opportunity to practice on mannequins. The training will not result in CPR certification, but information on how you can get certified will be available. Since 80% of cardiac arrests occur at home, it stands to reason that the life you save with CPR is likely to be someone you love. For more information about the free Hands-Only CPR training, contact Captain Rob Kohlhepp at (310-253-6830) or [email protected].

Wow – is everything happening on Tuesday this week?? From Culver City Friends of the Library co-presidents Elaine Hirohama and Nancy Kuechle comes word that a special Father’s Day story time will take place on Tuesday, June 4 at 7 pm at the Culver City Julian Dixon library. As always, for the Friends story time, a fun craft will follow the readings. The Library is located at 4975 Overland Avenue.

Finally – here’s something happening Wednesday eve, June 5th: locals “Hound Dog Dave and the Mel-tones” — American Roots and Blues Quartet will be performing from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at nearby (Westchester) Bar Melody, 9132 So. Sepulveda Blvd. Dave will be featured on guitar. The Melody is just across the street from the In & Out Burger near LAX.

Later on this month (June 23, to be exact) Culver City’s own Victor Abascal’s Vines on the Marycrest winery in Paso Robles will be participating in “Rhone Rangers L.A.” This event takes place at Vibiana, a historic site located in the vibrant downtown area of Los Angeles at 214 South Main Street, near the LA Times Building. The General Admission Ticket provides entry to the consumer walk-around tasting from 3 – 6 PM. Taste from over 200 wines poured by more than 40 wineries. Food trucks in the courtyard will provide tasty treats for purchase to complement Victor’s (and other vintners’) wines. Bid on wine and wine-related items at the silent auction; proceeds from the auction will benefit the Rhone Rangers Scholarship Fund. This event ends at 6 PM (last pour at 5:45 PM). Tickets are $45 (advance), $50 at the door. Buy them online at www.rhonerangersla2013-ga.eventbrite.com/#.

Just a reminder – Culver City High School’s Class of 1958’s 55th Reunion is happening this summer from noon-4:00 p.m. at Carlson Park on July 20. Admission is free, just bring a picnic lunch. For those who may not recall (just kidding!) the park offers sheltered tables with benches, four barbeques, two fireplaces, and lots of grassy areas under shady trees. The committee’s also planning a Happy Hour at the Culver Hotel on Friday, July 19 and a Sunday breakfast at Dinah’s on the 21st, so it’ll be a full weekend. Around 75 responses so far, so CCHS alums should be sure to get their names on the list by visiting www.culverhighalumni.org.

Beauty AND brains – that’s Paige Adams-Geller, former Miss Culver City and subsequently Miss California. Paige founded the premium denim company “Paige” in 2005 and her company is a leader in a field formerly dominated by male designers (“the denim mafia”). In addition to earning the Los Angeles Business Journal’s “Business Owner/CEO of the Year” title, she supports several charities championing women’s issues. Go, Paige!
