With more than 150 students gathering this Wednesday March 7 to walk, ride and roll to El Marino, Jim Shanman considered it a success. “We had about three times as many kids as we had last time.” Shanman is the idea man behind Walk ‘n Rollers, an organization getting more kids to burn calories and not gasoline getting to school.
Cards were counted, and the class with the most walkers was Senora Hebert’s Grade 3 with 14 students in her class all getting to school on foot. They were given the Silver Sneaker Award to keep for the month, until the next official walk ‘n roll day.
The meeting points of US Bank (corner of Sawtelle and Jefferson) and the Ballona Creek bridge on Sawtelle were crowded with skateboards and scooters, and lots of breeze- chilled parents escorting the kids.
Shanman said he was still discussing a launch date with Farragut, and also had several schools outside the CCUSD interested in getting involved.
