Culver City’s Artist Laureate Victoria Marks is thinking perhaps we could all use a hug, and she has a plan to make it happen. As her newest ‘participatory art,’ the city’s official artist will be gathering folks for a public demonstration of affection on August 6, 2026.
“HUG will be simple. And it will be a demonstration of caring, in public. It will be fun to practice!” Marks offered in her outreach, seeking Culver City people willing to sign on to be a part of the event.
If you have someone to hug, bring them! Any parent/child /friend/ partner/sister/brother/colleague/someone you want to get to know better… etc.) who can attend practices with you. If you don’t have someone to hug, partners will be available.
There are only two rehearsals.
“I’m quite certain that hugging can make a positive contribution to our health and well-being.” Participants will meet behind the Culver City Plunge in the Veteran Memorial Park to practice. There will be a few choreographic details, like a brief separation, like walking away and returning.
The schedule includes one planning rehearsal; one “Dress” run altogether; and one performance.
