What did the space age mean to the artists who watched it happen, and how did they contribute to it? While scientists and astronauts challenged conventional views of the universe and our place in it, painters, filmmakers, and sculptors from the East, the West, and the Global South interpreted these events, connecting what they saw to their own cultures.
Competing Cosmologies: Interpreting the Sky opens Saturday, November 7. It traces how space exploration inspired visual artists around the world, setting contemporary and Cold War-era artwork beside historical artifacts, including a full-scale model of Sputnik.
The Wende’s chief curator Joes Segal, associate curator Emma Diffley, and NASA historian Lois Rosson co-curated the exhibition.
Opening day starts with a curator-led tour at 12 p.m., speeches at 2 p.m., and a reception at 3 p.m. RSVP now to be part of the opening celebration!
