Author Nomura to Speak on ‘Mizuko: True Spirit’

Local author Art Nomura will speak about Mizuko: True Spirit, a biography of his paternal grandmother. This deeply researched and beautifully narrated tale offers a unique look at American history and immigration, and paints a portrait of a woman whose courage and fortitude allowed her family to survive in a new country.

When the Takahashi family, one of the wealthiest in western Japan, loses their great fortune in 1900, five-year old Mizuko Takahashi goes from riches to rags. Mizuko’s lifetime in Japan and America offers the reader an intimate look into the world of an immigrant. It is the story of one woman’s efforts to surmount racism, sexism, and poverty in the 20th century.

The free event will be held at the Julian Dixon Culver City County Library, on Saturday, May 9, 2026 from 4 – 5 pm.

Nomura will also talk about his own life as a Manzanar-born sansei, third-generation Japanese American.

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
