For the very latest updates on development, Fire and Police Department activities, Parks and Recreation and Senior Center Events, our City Manager John Nachbar rounds up the details.
• Spark of Love Toy Drive – Culver City Fire Department members collected and distributed over 500 toys this year for the Spark of Love Toy Drive. All toys and sporting equipment collected went to under-served children and teens in and around Culver City. Thank you to all Culver City community members who contributed!
• Annual Company and Platoon Evaluations – The Fire Department recently completed its 2015 company and platoon evaluations, which further demonstrated the Department’s commitment to training. The 12-company (a company is a crew of 3-5 personnel) evaluations required firefighters to perform a variety of timed tasks, such as donning personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus; practicing portable radio operations; executing technical rescue operations; and practicing large object stabilization and lift procedures. The three-platoon (a platoon is an entire shift, 18 personnel) evaluations simulated a swift water rescue incident in La Ballona flood control channel. All personnel demonstrated a high level of technical competence.
Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department
• The Culver City Senior Center Crochet Group – The dedicated Wednesday Crochet Group at the Culver City Senior Center donated more than 100 handmade items to Para Los Niños during the holiday season. Scarves, blankets, sweaters, booties, hats, and more – all handmade with love – were delivered to the families at Para Los Niños. Para Los Niños offers high-quality education, integrated with family support, mental health services, and community engagement opportunities to thousands of children living in at-risk neighborhoods in Los Angeles County, through partnerships with early education centers, charter schools and wellness centers.
• Culver City After School Recreation Program – The Culver City After School Recreation Program (CCARP) students returned to school following the holiday break on Monday, January 4th. The CCARP students are looking forward to a great new year!
• Culver City Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Event – The 11th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Event will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event will feature a community service fair; a live performance by Gerald C. Rivers as Dr. King; a live dramatic performance by Darryl Reed and Windy Barnes Farrell as Dr. King and his wife; a youth conversation with Culver City Teen Center members; and a panel discussion with Robert Farrell. The movie “Dare Not Walk Alone” will be shown at 2:30 p.m. This event is free to the public. More information can be found on the City’s website.
Police Department
• Exodus Recovery Center Grand Opening – On December 7, 2015 Council Member Jim B. Clarke, Lieutenant Bill Browne, Lieutenant Aubrey Kellum, Officer Jason Martin, and Clinician Dan Richardson attended the grand opening for the newly located Exodus Recovery, LLC Westside Mental Health Urgent Care. The center is located at 11444 W. Washington Boulevard. The facility officially opened its doors on December 10th and will remain open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist law enforcement and to provide services to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas; Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health Interim Director Robin Kay; and Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health Acting Deputy Director and Emergency Outreach Bureau Irma Castaneda also participated in the grand opening ceremony.
Public Works Department
• Senior Center Audio-Video System Replacement – The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department received notice from the County of Los Angeles that its application to secure excess Proposition A Maintenance and Servicing Funds in the amount of $199,595 was approved. The funds will be used to replace the Senior Center’s audio/video equipment.
• Centinela Avenue Pavement Project Completed – The project to repave Centinela Avenue from Green Valley Circle to Bristol Parkway is complete. The contractor has completed the pavement resurfacing and the new traffic striping, with the inclusion of new bike lane in both directions.
• Construction Updates:
On Monday, January 4th, Southern California Gas Company began the installation of a new 2” gas main and property service mains on Sherbourne Drive. The Gas Company installation work will be located between Washington Boulevard south to the end of the cul-de-sac (two blocks). The work is estimated to be completed in eight (8) weeks.
