Culver City Fire Department Assists with Lake Fire

When there’s a wildfire in California, it’s not just up to the local fire companies to address it; the state’s mutual aid agreement includes fire departments all over the state able to respond.

The Culver City Fire Department had nine personnel providing assistance in battling the Lake Fire, with all Culver City firefighters returned home on the evening of Sunday, July 14, 2024. The support for the Santa Barbara County blaze also included one engine and a Battalion Chief.

“We respond when requested, by the state agency,” offered CCFD Battalion Chief Paul Voorhees, “and whenever we are requested for wild fire support, we do what we can.” Only in situations that would leave an insufficient number of firefighters to take care of any local emergencies – if there were people out who were injured, or equipment was being repaired – would they decline.

According to CALFire the Lake Fire has burned close to 40,000 acres and is currently 34% contained. The fire has burned almost 60 square miles.

Recent reports from CALFire note that “Firefighters continue to make good progress mopping up hot spots and strengthening control lines on the Lake Fire.  There is a Fire Weather Watch, with the potential for dry lightning and gusty winds in the region. An Excessive Heat Warning will be in effect with highs expected to reach the 80’s and 90’s. Lighter vegetation like grass continues to dry out and is receptive to wildfire.”

Voorhees also noted that it is “highly likely that CCPD will be called at assist with more wildfires. We are projected to have an intense season.”
