Bass Responds to Proposed Budget Cuts

Yesterday, March 11, 2019 Representative Karen Bass (D-Calif.), Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, issued the following statement after the White House released its FY2020 budget.

“President Trump’s budget is deeply troubling and makes it abundantly clear the White House isn’t serious about addressing the needs of this country,” said Rep. Bass. “It makes drastic cuts to housing assistance, as Los Angeles goes through one of its worst housing crises in history, and student loan debt programs, as young people are strapped with more than $1 trillion in student loan debt. The budget also hurts our leadership abroad. The proposed cuts of $12.3 billion dollars, or 23% of the entire State Department allocation, only stands to diminish diplomacy, which only leads to a need to increase money for military defense and war.”

“The American people voted for a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives and this is why. Our government needs to get back to working for the people.”
