MCLM – Black Talkies to Feature Gates “Black in Latin America”

Saurday Sept. 23rd at 2:30 pm, Black Talkies On Parade presents the 2011 documentary Black in Latin America. The Clayton Museum will screen Part 1 – Haiti & the Dominican Republic: An Island Divided and Part 2 – Cuba: The Next Revolution. Harvard Professor and MacArthur Fellow Henry Louis Gates Jr. explores African history throughout Latin American including Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba. The film begins with the journey many African slaves took during the Middle Passage and traces their influences to current culture in Latin America within religion, politics, art and beyond. Gates also examines the ongoing racism that many Africans in Latin America continue to face. Total runtime of the program is 104 minutes.

Your afternoon host will be Lloyd Clayton, Executive Director and following the screening there will be a Q&A with speaker Shawnee Gibbs where the audience is invited to ask questions and share their own cultural heritage stories.
