Suspect Arrested in Robbery at Westfield Shopping Center

urlOn November 16th, 2016, at 12:20 pm, a 90 year old male was seated in the food court of the Westfield Shopping Center, Culver City. A subject (described below) walked up to the victim, ripped gold chains from his neck and threw him to the ground. While the victim was on the ground, the suspect took his wallet and fled on foot in an unknown direction. The victim was subsequently taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. The image of the suspect was captured on security cameras and the attached photo was released via the various media outlets.

Suspect Description: Male African American, approximately 25-30 years of age, approximately 6’0 tall, thin build.

As a result of the media coverage, we received an outpouring of citizen concern over this heinous crime and number of leads.

Culver City Police Detectives followed up on all the leads, which resulted in the identification of Los Angeles resident, Thomas Bernoudy, as the suspect in the crime. Bernoudy was also identified as a documented gang member.

On 12/22/16, Detectives established surveillance near the suspect’s home in Los Angeles, and he was located and taken into custody at a nearby gas station without incident. Based on the totality of the investigation, the Detectives are confident that Bernoudy is the person responsible for this crime.

On 12/27/16, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed 1 count of robbery and 1 count of elder abuse on Bernoudy.

The Culver City Police Department would like to thank the Westfield Culver City Mall, Media and members of the public for aiding in the apprehension of this violent suspect.
