Jozelle SmithThis week kicks off with the Culver City Rock & Mineral Club’s monthly meeting coming up this Monday, May 11 featuring an informative and entertaining evening with Justin Zzyzx, who will tell the history of our state rock (California Serpentine, or Serpentinite). Zzyzx (and haven’t we all driven past Zzyzx Road off the I-15and wondered how in the heck it got its name?) is prominent in the gem and mineral community for his work exposing fakes and forgeries in the mineral industry, and for his Downtown LA Zzyzx Gallery of Natural Science. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Veterans’ Memorial Building (enter from the rear parking lot) and guests are always welcome.

Opening Night is at 7:00 p.m. this Thursday, May 14 for “Into the Woods Jr.”, with all of your favorite songs and characters from the movie and the Broadway show, but with its happy ending, appropriate for all ages! deeLightful Productions, in collaboration with the Culver City Department of Parks & Recreation, presents live musical theatre starring talented local kids ages 7-17, and has also scheduled “Woods” performances for Friday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, May 16 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Ticket price is $10.00, available only at the door at Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium, 4117 Overland Ave. For more information visit www.dee-lightful.org. Coming up later in the summer will be performances of “Xanadu, Jr.” and Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast, Jr.”

Heads-up to members and friends of the Culver-Palms Family YMCA: the YMCA and adjoining Culver Palms United Methodist Church parking lots will be closed Monday, May 11 – Friday, May 15 for significant grading and repaving. This is being done in to improve the condition of the driveway and back parking lot, paving a portion of the preschool playground and replacing the fence. While construction is in progress they are moving the Y preschoolers from the church to the main Y facility for their outdoor play. The Automobile Club, one door south of the Y, has agreed to let Y members park in their lot after 4:30pm. Earlier in the day, please use street and neighborhood parking.

Grace Church is turning 70 years old (1945-2015) and you’re invited to the celebration! This Saturday, May 16 at 7:00 p.m. a 70th Celebration Concert will take place, featuring maestra Marya Basaraba and the “Opera Plus” Singers, followed by a gala reception at 8:15 p.m. On Sunday, May 17 there will be one worship service at 10:00 a.m., where folks are invited to share memories and stories of “What Grace Church Means to Me”. Past members and the community are invited. This will be followed by the 70th Anniversary Brunch. This Saturday night Bethel No. 2, Culver City, of Job’s Daughters International, cordially invites you to their semi-annual Installation of Bethel Officers, themed, “We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams,” (Willy Wonka).
