ASCAP Gives Symphonic Jazz Orchestra the Downbeat for 2nd Graders

The Culver City Education Foundation has a score that’s more than musical – the ASCAP Foundation (American Society of Composers and Performers) has awarded a $2,000 grant to support CCUSD’s 2nd grade Artists in Schools music residency program, created and presented by the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra (SJO). Comprised of four 7-week teaching blocks and a final, culminating assembly that includes the premiere of a new work composed by the students, the Artists in Schools program takes students from being music appreciators to becoming music creators

ASCAP Foundation funding will go toward the cost of producing school-wide culminating assemblies at the elementary schools. To conclude the music residency in June, a quartet from the SJO performs a school-wide assembly that both covers the areas studied over the course of the year and features the premieres of the works composed by the students.
