Cold War Spaces – Espionart

The visual arts played a remarkable and sometimes amusing role in the Cold War. While the Soviet Union and the United States accused their respective avant-gardes of bourgeois decadence or communist infiltration, the very same artists under attack were highlighted in international conferences and exhibitions to celebrate the freedom and originality of Soviet and American art and culture. In this week’s Cold War Spaces interview with Julia Tatiana Bailey, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the National Gallery Prague and founder of the Espionart blog (https://espionart.com), we will speak about the use of visual art as a means of Cold War diplomacy and propaganda. Julia Tatiana Bailey specializes in the visual culture of the Cold War, and the relationship between art, state politics and movements for civil rights and independence.
