Both an awards ceremony on Sept. 10, 2026 and a presentation to the City Council on Sept. 14 honored the Certified Sustainable Businesses in Culver City. Since 2017, the city has offered a program to guide and support local businesses in becoming sustainable, saving water, energy and diverting solid waste; 112 businesses have achieved certification.
Susie Borlito, who spoke to the council meeting at a public hearing on the agenda, offered some positive statistics on the progress being made. Borlito, along with Shea Cunningham, (who attended the award ceremony but not the council meeting,) has grown the program over it’s almost-decade of existence.
Mayor Freddy Puza offered that “People sometimes say that being forward-thinking and taking care of the planet is antithetical to business interests; I reject that notion, and [this shows how] it can be mutually inclusive.”
