If you’re coming to the Kirk Douglas Theatre for the AVPA Blurred Vision Theater performance of Puffs this weekend, prepare to be welcomed by enthusiastic fans in Hogwarts house attire and classic ’90s pop ballads. If you love Harry Potter, you’re in for a treat—though this play isn’t about him, you’ll still find it delightful!
The story follows Wayne Hopkins, an orphan from New Mexico who discovers he’s a wizard, learning from his uncle that his parents were British (although he’s not.)
The cast highlights Lina DeRosa as the Narrator: Captivating from her first line, DeRosa skillfully guides the audience through the show from start to finish. Equally charming is Emerson Jurentkuff as Wayne Hopkins, who perfectly embodies “the other boy who lived,” making for a relatable and engaging lead. Natalie Cayetano plays Megan Jones as the tough, determined Hermione-like Puff with exceptional care and depth. Isaiah Griffin as both Cedric & Mr. Voldy gets two very different roles both very right. Griffin’s portrayal of Cedric is inspiring, and his version of Voldemort manages to be both intimidating and oddly reassuring.
The whole ensemble brings boundless energy to every scene, adding vibrancy and humor throughout the show. The show is fast-paced, full of clever humor, and consistently entertaining.
Director Lee Hanson offered “The world needs a show like this right now,” and if you need a little magic, come and enjoy the Puffs as they offer a different perspective on a very well-known tale.
