Wende Museum Pauses to Install New Exhibit

The Wende Museum’s interior is closed until Saturday, April 27, 2024 while we update our exhibitions. However, our outdoor Wednesday morning mindfulness class will continue with entry via the gate from the parking lot.

When we re-open, our new exhibition Undercurrents I: Stories, Symbols, Sounds will delve into underground Cold War art scenes. Through appropriation and subversion of official imagery, the artworks in this exhibition opened new readings of social and political situations.

This exhibition will feature East German and Polish underground publications, portfolios, and artist books from the collections of the Wende Museum and the Getty Research Institute, as well as Hungarian and Czechoslovak countercultural photographs from the Archive of Modern Conflict. It will also include works by American artist, educator, and social justice advocate Corita Kent courtesy of the Corita Art Center.

Our continuing exhibition Visions of Transcendence: Creating Space in East and West will be refreshed with works from notable artists Gary Tyler, Trevis Hoffmeister, and Nadya Tolokonnikova of Pussy Riot. We will also be adding new open storage displays and a new guardhouse installation exploring sound and myth.

We hope you join us for our grand re-opening, Saturday, April 27!
