Symphonic Jazz Orchestra Announces Matching Grant/Back to School Fundraiser

Your donation to SJO’s “Back-to-School” Campaign directly supports “Music in the Schools” residencies that have served over 60,000 students in under-resourced communities throughout Los Angeles County.

For the last eight years, SJO has partnered with King Elementary in Compton where 93% of the students are economically disadvantaged. Over 400 students at King Elementary participate in “Music in the Schools” residencies each week. From kindergarten through fifth grade, these students progress through SJO’s sequential and integrated interdisciplinary residencies that are connected to math, science, creative writing, history and social studies.

SJO’s partnership with King Elementary is just one of our many successes since launching “Music in Schools” residencies back in 2007.

SJO Music Director Mitch Glickman introduces King Elementary’s 3rd grade “Bach to Bebop” performers.

We’re very excited to announce that the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation, a longtime supporter and friend to SJO, has committed a generous matching grant of $2,500 in support of SJO’s “Back-to-School” Campaign. All donations made by August 31 will be matched by The Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation, up to $2,500.
