Sony Pictures Entertainment Gets Crunchyroll for $1.2 Billion

Sony Pictures completed their acquisition of Crunchyroll, proving that anime is a category with an expanding number of fans. Crunchyroll has anime, manga content, mobile games, video on demand, and event merchandise. With more than more than  a thousand anime titles, and distribution rights for more than 30,000 episodes, it’s one of the most popular anime platforms available.

“With the addition of Crunchyroll, we have an unprecedented opportunity to serve anime fans like never before and deliver the anime experience across any platform they choose,” Tony Vinciquerra, Sony Pictures chairman and chief executive said in a statement. “Our goal is to create a unified anime subscription experience as soon as possible.

Sony is looking to combine Crunchyroll’s operations with those of Funimation, an Asian media dubbing and distribution company Sony Pictures Television added in 2017.

Kenichiro Yoshida, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Sony Group Corporation offered, “Anime is a rapidly growing medium that enthralls and inspires emotion among audiences around the globe. The alignment of Crunchyroll and Funimation will enable us to get even closer to the creators and fans who are the heart of the anime community.”
