Bass Applauds Garcetti’s Nomination as Ambassador

Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Africa, Global Health and Global Human Rights issued the following statement: “Los Angeles is a world-class city with world-class leaders. President Biden’s nomination of Mayor Eric Garcetti to serve this country as Ambassador to the Republic of India further underscores this Administration’s commitment to re-establishing our country’s leadership in the world.

“For as long as I’ve known Mayor Garcetti, I’ve known his determination and I’ve known his heart. In the face of any obstacle in our city’s way – whether it was climate change or the COVID-19 pandemic – one of Mayor Garcetti’s greatest strengths was always to bring everyone to the table and to unify around a common goal.

“Mayor Garcetti will be an excellent diplomat. He co-founded Climate Mayors and led more than 400 U.S. mayors to adopt the Paris Climate Agreement. He chairs C40Cities – a network of 97 of the world’s biggest cities taking action on climate change as well as leading on a global response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also led our city’s successful bid to bring the summer Olympic Games back to the United States for the first time in three decades.

“While we will absolutely miss his leadership here in Los Angeles, I look forward to continuing to work with him – this time on the world stage – to better the lives of all Americans. I urge the Senate to swiftly confirm the nomination of our Mayor.”
