Man with Machete Persuaded to Surrender by CCPD Crisis Negotiation

On July 8th, 2021 at approximately 11:45 PM., Culver City Police Department received a call from the 7000 Block of Wrightcrest Dr. of a male subject on the roof of a residence brandishing a machete. The reporting party/resident stated that the subject was unknown to him and that when he confronted the subject about being on his roof, the subject violently threatened him with the machete. Responding officers arrived and contacted the subject who was armed with a machete and was now standing on a 2nd story scaffolding of a neighboring residence that was under construction.

Several neighboring agencies also responded to provide mutual assistance with establishing a perimeter around the residence. Nearby residents were evacuated while officers established communication with the subject and ordered him to come down from the scaffolding. The subject refused to come down and over the next several hours, officers continuously attempted to convince him to come down and surrender, including making several loudspeaker announcements from an LAPD helicopter. A Culver City Police Department drone was launched and used to monitor the subject throughout the incident. The subject continued to ignore officer’s requests and continued to yell obscenities at officers, while still armed with the machete.

At approximately 3:00 AM, Culver City Police Department’s Crisis Negotiation and Emergency Response Teams arrived on scene to assist. A trained Crisis Negotiation Team Officer then took over communication with the subject. The Crisis Negotiation Team Officer was able to build a rapport with the subject and de-escalate the situation. The Crisis Negotiation Team was ultimately able to convince the subject to put the machete down and climb down from the scaffolding and surrender. The subject was then placed under arrest for PC 245, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, without further incident. There were no injuries as a result of this incident.

Anyone seeking further information related to this crime is asked to contact the Culver City Police Department Watch Commander at 310-253-6202.
