Cold War Spaces – Behind the Iron Curtain

The coming two Cold War Spaces interviews will be dedicated to unofficial art behind the iron Curtain. On April 7, the Wende Museum’s Joes Segal will speak with Susanne Altmann, guest curator of the Wende exhibition The Medea Insurrection, about radical women artists in Cold War-era Eastern Europe, specifically about their work in the open air.

This Wednesday, March 24, 2021, the guest will be art historian Sara Blaylock, whose book Parallel Public: Experimental Art in Late East Germany will be published by MIT Press next year. We will speak about East Germany’s alternative art scene during the 1980s, with a focus on Leipzig as a dynamic center of artistic counterculture under late socialism.

Wednesday, March 24, 12 p.m. PDT: Sara Blaylock – Alternative Space: Experimental Culture in the GDR
