“This national ranking is a testament to the expertise of our faculty and, just as importantly, to the quality of education that our students receive in the discipline of psychology,” said college president Dr. James M. Limbaugh.
“We strive to meet all students where they are, fostering success. Our students are hard-working, intrinsically motivated, and show a great degree of perseverance. We are immensely proud of their accomplishments,” added Carrie Canales, Ph.D. LMFT. Dr. Canales is the Vice-Chair of the WLAC Psychology Department and the Director of the Addiction Studies Program.
The fundamentals of psychology are beneficial to many entry-level human service jobs, including psychiatric technicians, rehabilitation workers, and correctional officers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for psychiatric technicians is expected to increase by 12 percent. A larger elderly population has prompted a significantly greater demand for social and human services assistants. More of them are also needed in treatment programs to help people with addiction.
“The psychology program at WLAC offers an Associate Degree for Transfer and an Associate Degree. The Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) – also known as ‘A Degree With a Guarantee’ – is a class of degrees created in conjunction with the California State Universities to provide clear, streamlined pathways to transfer,” explained WLAC Psychology Professor Payal Jain, LMFT. Additionally, students who complete an ADT are guaranteed admission to a Cal State in the same or a similar major. West also offers an Associate Degree or Certificate in Addiction Studies which prepare students for licensing exams for the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Educators (CAADE) and the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP). Several classes may be used for continuing education credit for CA clinical or addiction licenses or public safety professions. More information about these options is available at WLAC.edu/Psychology .
West Los Angeles College is an ACCJC accredited community college offering career certificates and degrees, university transfer, and professional advancement courses. Awarded for its online degree programs prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, West will continue to conduct classes online in Spring 2021.
