Police Use of Force – Review and Recommendations to Come Before Council

Throughout this past year, the city has been moving steadily forward on reviewing the police department’s ‘use of force’ policies. At its meeting on June 15, the City Council approved the Mayor signing on behalf of the City the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance Mayor’s Pledge on Police Use of Force. At it’s June 22 2020 meeting, the City Council Ad Hoc Police Liaison Subcommittee recommended that City Council authorize the development of a task force to review all public safety services, resources, and responsibilities. City Council ultimately directed the City Manager’s Office to lead a comprehensive 90-day study and bring back recommendations on options to reimagine public safety in Culver City. The City Manager’s Office has held multiple meetings with the Chief’s Advisory Panel and other community groups to inform recommendations that will be presented to City Council.

Next, at the City Council meeting on October 12, 2020 at 7:00 P.M., city staff will present recommendations from the public safety review for City Council’s consideration.
