Every four weeks we pause Cold War Spaces to make space for Art-Past-Present, a series of interviews with artists and curators about the significance of history and memory in contemporary art, co-hosted by Farrah Karapatian. Our second guest is Aneesa Shami, (pictured above,) a Los Angeles-based textile artist who combines abstraction with references to personal memories and global mythologies. Focusing on her body of work relating to Lebanon and the world of Islam, we will speak, among other things, about art historical traditions, orientalism, global divisions and connections, and the social responsibility of the artist.
