Community College District Seeks Public Input on LGBTQ Bill of Rights

The public is invited to the next meeting of the Los Angeles Community College District’s (LACCD) Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on LGBTQ Affairs beginning at 2 p.m., Tuesday, September 24, at the District’s headquarters, 770 Wilshire Boulevard, in Downtown Los Angeles.

LACCD Board of Trustees member David Vela chairs the committee. On the agenda will be drafting an “LACCD LGBTQ Bill of Rights” resolution that would go before the full Board for consideration and adoption in October.

“With more than 10,000 students in the District who self-identify as part of the LGBTQ community and with hundreds of faculty and staff who are also LGBTQ, it is vitally important that the District can identify and respond to their needs,” Trustee Vela said. “Too often, the LGBTQ community is overlooked and underserved and I want to make sure the District does not follow that path.”

Trustee Vela was appointed Committee Chair by LACCD Chancellor Francisco C. Rodriguez, Ph.D. Mr. Vela is the District’s first openly gay member of the Board of Trustees. He was appointed to his seat June 8, 2018 for a term that expires December 14, 2020.

“Thanks to Trustee Vela’s continued leadership and advocacy on behalf of the District’s LGBTQ community. All too frequently, LGBTQ community college students struggle alone, in silence, without appropriate support at a critical time in their lives,” LACCD Board President Hoffman said. “We want to change that and make sure they know LACCD and its nine colleges are safe and welcoming places.”
