AVPA Closes the Year with Gala and Awards; Co-Director Hatanaka Retires

As the school year draws to an end at CCUSD, the last few weeks have been the closing sweep for the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts with the performances at the Java Gala fundraiser and the AVPA Academy Awards. Not just graduating seniors, but students at all levels joined together to showcase their talents and scoop up their accolades.

The end of the year included the announcement that long time Co-Director of the Academy, Kristine Hatanaka, would be retiring, and that Theater Director Kristin Opestad will also be leaving for another position.

The Java Gala was held at the Kirk Douglas Theater on June 2, and the tenth annual fundraiser did a great job of showing their audience how very talented the kids are; music, dance, theater, and fine arts all gave presentations that showed off their year of accomplishments.

The Academy Awards were given out on Sunday, June 10 at the Veteran’s Auditorium, and the graduating seniors were given their sashes to wear for graduation, and awarded with honors in their major and minor status for their years in the program.
