We love it: The Ukes of Culver City’s motto is “When in doubt, grab a ukulele!” They meet on the first Saturday of every month at 10:00 a.m. (that means the next one will be on Saturday, November 5) at the Culver City Elks’ Lodge, 11160 Washington Place. You’re invited to come play, listen and learn about ukuleles – they’ll have lessons and jam sessions and individual performances from those who’d like to take the stage. Beginners are welcome as are any folks that might just be interested in this fascinating instrument.

From our own Ballona Creek Renaissance folks comes word that the Los Angeles Audubon Society is seeking volunteers to teach schoolchildren about the natural history and native habitats at our neighboring Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area in the Baldwin Hills. Volunteers will lead young people on nature walks and help them to restore natural areas in the park, which is one of the great open spaces found within the city of Los Angeles. No experience is necessary, just a love of the outdoors and the energy and enthusiasm to educate others about the wonders of nature found within our city. Training will be provided. All programs take place on Fridays during the school year. Contact Cindy Hardin at (310) 301-0050 or at [email protected]

What a great program: From Dan O’Brien comes word that the CCUSD is seeking guest speakers for the Culver City Middle School AVID (Advancement by Individual Determination) program who represent a wide range of careers to share about their educational and career paths. AVID is a program for students who would be the first in their families to go to college and provides support in study skills, note-taking, and classroom discussion strategies. AVID classes also provide tutoring and an exploration of the wide variety of career paths available to students. Guests speakers can demonstrate just what careers are out there, what their jobs entail and what interests them most about their careers. The classes take place for an hour on Mondays for 7th and 8th grade students, and speakers are encouraged to bring photos or samples of the work they do. For more information, you’re invited to contact CCUSD Board member Susanne Robins at [email protected].
