Julian Dixon Culver City Library – Favorites Return and New Events Begin

torte-MLots of great things going on at the Julian Dixon – You knew the building was open, and now you can find out how the calendar is filling up with Centennial Celebrations, Storytimes, Book Groups and more all happening next month.

Start planning to join in the One Book, One City program that will be part of the Culver City Centennial Celebration. We will be reading Stewart O’Nan’s best selling novel, West of Sunset and O’Nan himself will be here on October 14 and 15 to talk about the book and the time F. Scott Fitzgerald spent as a screenwriter at MGM. Lots of great activities will be planned, so if you are in a book club, or know of a book club, or just want to join in the literary activities, put this one on your list. Looking for a meta book group ? Time, Space and Family – the Novels Love_Medicine_Coverof Louise Erdrich is meeting on May 19 at 7 pm to discuss her first and second novels – Love Medicine and The Beet Queen – along with some exercises from Lynda Barry’s Syllabus and Dawna Markova’s The Open Mind.  Who do you think of as family? How are you connected to the place you live? Can culture create magic? Please read the novels – other books will be excerpted for you. Bring a notebook, a pen and your thoughts. Got questions? The Friends Knitting group will start up again on Monday, May 2. We will meet from 2:30-4:00 on Monday afternoons as a regularly scheduled activity. All ages and ability levels are welcome. This was conceived as a program for teens and tweens, but we have expanded to include everyone. It’s a great opportunity to learn to knit or crochet, to hone your skills, or just to enjoy crafting with others. Materials and instruction are provided by the Friends. Join us!

The Friends will bring back our popular First Tuesday Storytime on Tuesday, May 3 at 7 pm with guest reader Paula Wilson. A Mother’s Day craft and an edible book project will be available as well.

May 14 will see the return of the amazing Edible Book Festival. Plan your entries, or come and admire the creativity of others. Prizes will be available in a variety of categories! Entries should arrive at 1:30. Awards will be announced at 2:30. A special cake will be available for attendees!
