“Tiny Bubbles”… ah, Hawaii is being recreated by the Culver City Strummers, a group of about 60 people ukulele players sponsored by the Culver City Senior Center. (The classes started about four years ago with 10 to 15 people and now each of the two classes/week has 40 – 60 members!) They give concerts several times a year – including every year for the last three years at Fiesta La Ballona. Their teacher is Cali Rose, and their lessons take place in the Multi-Purpose Room in the Veterans’ Memorial Building. You must be a member of the Senior Center to join in the fun, which means you should be 55 years of age or more, so get those “Pearly Shells” on and start strumming!
It’s Third Saturday coming up again on February 20, which means it’s time for Walk With a Doc, beginning at 8:45 a.m. with a Health Presentation by Jeffrey Penso, MD and Sarah Carpenter, MD. Dr. Penso will speak about “Zika and Other Challenges.” This will be followed at 8:50 a.m. with a warmup led by Brandon Webb, YMCA fitness trainer and then a one-hour (give or take) walk at your own pace. Folks should meet near the playground/tennis court area at Vet’s Park. The following Wednesday, February 24, Wednesday they’ll meet at Culver City Park at 5:15 pm. For a BONUS walk! Parking is on Duquesne just south of Jefferson Blvd. adjacent to the Boneyard Dog Park. Walk uphill to Baldwin Hills Overlook- and back. This walk is about 45 minutes and moderately vigorous.
Is everything happening this coming Saturday? Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and the County of Los Angeles Public Library plus the Culver City Friends of the Library invites everyone to the Culver City Julian Dixon Library’s (Grand Re-) Opening this Saturday, February 20 at 10:00 a.m. You’ll enjoy refreshments, children’s activities and an official Open House immediately following the formal program. As you may have noticed, the Library has been closed for the past year for extensive remodeling and upgrading, so this should be exciting! Please rsvp to [email protected].
Looking for some fun, eh? Then join the Culver City Sister City’s delegation travelling to Lethbridge, Alberta from Tuesday May 24 to Saturday May 28, 2016. Our sister city of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada has invited a delegation of up to eight CCSCC members to visit, and are offering homestays at the homes of Lethbridge Twinning Society (LTS) members, for the four nights. There will be minimal expenses while in Lethbridge since delegates will be the guests of LTS members. The Lethbridge Twinning Society is working on plans which include visits to Museum, Art galleries, and other points of interest in Lethbridge. (Airfare to Calgary and transportation will be at your expense. The estimated cost is under $400 non-stop. Prices are subject to change. Transportation from Calgary to Lethbridge will depend on number in delegation and will be divided among the group.) There still may be space available, so if you have questions or would like additional information, please contact Maureen Genteman at [email protected] or by phone at (310) 839-9945.
