The Culver City Rock & Mineral Club invites all to its January meeting, set for Monday, January 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Veterans’ Memorial Building. Program Chair Ellen Moe will present Dr. Steve Hardinger, senior lecturer in organic chemistry at UCLA. Dr Hardinger will speak on gypsum, a neglected mineral, often thought of as nothing more than drywall ore, and his talk promises to be an eye-opener. Fellowship and refreshments round out the meetings, and if you’re a budding rockhound, drop by – or for more information visit www.culvercityrocks.org.
What a great way to start the year – “Walk-With-a-Doc” kicks off in Culver City on Saturday, January 18 at 9:00 a.m. on the lawn near the tennis courts at Veteran’s Park. Get your friends, family members, pets – heck, anyone you know – to put on their exercise gear and enjoy a healthy 60-minute walk through Culver City. This all came about when Mayor Jeff Cooper was exercising in the gym at the Culver-Palms Family YMCA and on the next treadmill was Jeffrey Penso, MD. A Los Angeles County Medical Association boardmember, Dr. Penso mentioned the LACMAWalk-With-A-Doc series to the Mayor and a subsequent conversation with Culver City activist Grace Elliott was all it took put the Culver City walk together. The walk will be led by Dr. Pouya Shafipour, MD, of Wellesley Medical in Santa Monica, who also leads the monthly Santa Monica walk. Walk-With-A-Doc began in Ohio and now covers the US and Canada, and has recently reached Australia and Moscow. Want to join in the fun? Email [email protected] or call (213) 226-0313 to register. Special note: Get there at 8:40 a.m. and participate in warm-up exercises led by Culver-Palms Family YMCA staffer Brandon Webb.
