Looking to do a good deed this summer? Then how about joining in a Ballona Creek Cleanup? Meet with members of Ballona Creek Renaissance (BCR) on Saturday, July 27, 9:00-noon, at the creek bike path entrance, Centinela Ave. & Milton St. (LA 90066). Help BCR clean the creek of ocean-bound trash at this attractive mini-park, where the incoming tide meets the outgoing runoff. Open to volunteers of all ages. (BCR signs for community service credits, if you need them) Birds, fish, and reeds co-habit the area, so participants are asked to remember to respect and “protect while you collect.” For details, waiver forms, and updates, go online to www.ballonacreek.org.

Congratulations to Sharon Hyland-Elstein, named the Culver City Senior Citizens Association’s “July Senior of the Month! Sharon has donated hours and hours to the Center since 2003, following the example of volunteerism set by her mother and grandmother. She “discovered” the Center because of her mother’s participation, and has been an active member of the board, helped make the Center’s 10th Anniversary last March such a success, and devoted her time to countless other projects. Sharon also joined husband Steve as a member of Culver City CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) as well helping the American Red Cross as a case worker following Hurricane Katrina. She also serves on the board of the Friends of the Julian Dixon Library. She and Steve have five adult children and six grandchildren, two of whom, Taylor and Genevieve, are following Sharon’s example of service to others. Congratulations, Sharon!

Want to be uplifted and inspired? Come view the film “Phoenix Dance,” (see photo) a 21-minute documentary by Kaarina Epperlein, screening at 4:00 p.m.on July 21 at the Culver City Senior Center. Admission and parking is free, and it’s an inspiring film about Homer Avila, a dancer with one leg. Homer was a dancer all his life, but when he lost his leg to cancer, it wasn’t the end of his career – he continues dancing just as beautifully as ever, and it’s amazing to watch. Theisfree screening is sponsored by the Culver City Disability Advisory Committee, Culver City Senior Citizens Association, and Culver City Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services. Wondrous for anyone to watch, the film may be of special interest to students seeking education regarding disabilities; individuals living with disabilities and their families; dancers and choreographers looking for inspiration; filmmakers or film studies students; and community members seeking involvement in Disability Advisory Committee activities. For more information call (310) 253-6724.
