Fire Above Bill Botts Touches Inglewood Oil Field

A downed power line is considered to be the cause of the fire that broke out April 22 in the area above Bill Botts Field, according to CCFD Battalion Chief Chris Syverson. “It was called in to 911 just about 7 pm, so I’ll estimate we had it under control in very short order, and completely out by about 7:30. After that, there’s the mop-up, which takes considerably longer; we were still on it this morning.”

With Los Angeles County Fire units working on the other side of the site, a “structure protection group” was dispatched to Wrightcrest Drive, with Captain Chris Pedego in charge of Engine Company #3.

No structures were threatened, and the clearance from the Baldwin Hills Oil Field was the same distance as the clearance required from residences. “I think I did see a working [oil] well-head within the actual acre of burn, ” offered Syverson “but we had things under control very quickly, and there was no real risk of ignition.”
