Dear Editor – Education Before Politics

Dear Editor,

As a lifetime Democrat and former CCUSD School Board Member, I was very disappointed when I read the list of voting recommendations of the Culver City Democratic Club. The Club endorsed a vote NO on Prop. 38 on school funding!

The passage of Prop 38 can be very beneficial to CCUSD. Every year, the Culver City Education Foundation and School Booster Clubs and PTA spend countless parent hours raising funds which add up to approximately less than $400,000. Prop.38, however, if passed by the voters would bring in approximately $6.5 million for Culver City Schools.

The Club’s opposition to Prop 38 in my opinion is putting politics before student needs. This is especially disappointing considering that our former school board president Karlo Silbiger has been a longtime leader and past president of the Club. It is also sadly reminiscent of the ambivalence School Board member, Patricia Sievers, showed toward this essential increased funding for schools at the Oct. 23, 2012 school board meeting.

Basically, the Club followed Gov. Brown’s party line of Yes on Prop 30 and NO on 38. I believe that is a disservice to our public school children here in Culver City and in our State now and in the foreseeable future. Proposition 38 is the only proposition supported by the CA Parent Teachers Assoc. (PTA). It was also endorsed by United Parents of Culver City (UPCC). For more information on UPCC, please go to UnitedParentsCulverCity.com.

This is an example of politicians disappointing parents. We need true parent-advocates, not politicians, deciding the fate of our students.

PLEASE VOTE YES ON PROPS 30 and 38.
