City Looks to Decommission Public Art Work ‘Media in Motion’

As the city changes, one piece of public art may be left in the past.

Hudson Pacific Properties, Inc., the new owner of 10950 Washington Blvd. is requesting to deaccession Media in Motion, a public artwork currently installed at the address.

Media in Motion comprises two flat panels representing television screens. These screens have frosted glass with abstract silkscreened images of the site incorporated into them. These images appear to be in motion and can be seen by both east- and west-bound traffic.

Media in Motion, by Paul Novacek and Nick Seierup, signifies the address, and so would not be available to be moved to another location.

Since September 2024, Hudson Pacific Properties, Inc. has proposed a new mixed-used, multi-family development at the location. The existing building will be demolished, and the new development will be constructed in its place.

Culver City Municipal Code (CCMC) Section 15.06.175 provides guidelines for deaccessioning permanent artworks commissioned in conjunction with the City’s Art in Public Places Program.

The artwork must have been installed for at least five years, which is a basic requirement for deaccessioning. Media in Motion, which experienced sizable ‘wear and tear’ due to outdoor conditions, has been on public view for 27 years. Relocating the artwork to a new site is not possible.

The city will hold a meeting on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at 7 pm in the council chambers at City Hall. Persons who are unable to attend the meeting but wish to submit written comments may do so before 4:00 PM on Tuesday, August 19, by letter to Sally Unsworth, Cultural Affairs Division, 9770 Culver Boulevard, Culver City, CA 90232-0507; or by e-mail to sally.unsworth@culvercity.org.
