Join Bike Culver City as mobility justice leader, Yolanda Davis-Overstreet provides a comprehensive overview of her three-year journey in creating two short film docuseries on Biking While Black, as well as share insights from her research and findings documented in the advocacy guide titled “Reimagine Biking While Black: A Road Map to Advocacy & Joy Guide.“
In 2021 and 2022, Davis-Overstreet was awarded funding through the Go Human Mini-Grant program to film and release two short documentary films. The 2021 film titled, “Biking While Black: How Safe Are Black Lives Bicycling?”, an award-winning documentary film focused on the daily experiences that Black lives encounter while bicycling. And the second film, created in 2022, titled, “Biking While Black: Continuing to Ride Through Decriminalization, Disenfranchisement, and Gentrification,” addresses critical conversations around police enforcement, historic disinvestment of infrastructure, racism, racial profiling, and even death.
Building on the groundwork that the film laid out, in 2023,Davis-Overstreet published “Reimagine Biking While Black: Roadmap to Justice and Joy Advocacy Guide,” a community-led data and storytelling project that spotlights the personal narratives of mobility justice advocates, actions being taken to address transportation inequities in Los Angeles, how advocates incorporate joy in their work. Reimagine Biking While Black not only presented innovative ideas but also outlined actionable steps for its users. This culturally centered Guide not only offers essential education, data, and resources but also illuminates the necessary measures for creating safer and more sustainable streets and spaces within communities of color.
In this session, Davis-Overstreet will screen her second short documentary film, “Biking While Black: Continuing to Ride Through Decriminalization, Disenfranchisement, and Gentrification”. Following the screening, she will offer training to participants, guiding them in applying her established mobility justice advocacy strategies to effectively address transportation inequities.
