Mr. Howard “Howie” Zager passed away on Monday, July 3rd 2023. He was 75 years old. He was a teacher at Culver City High School from 1972 until his retirement in 2010, but served as a substitute for years after.
“Born to teach,” Zager held degrees from Santa Monica Community College, University of California at Los Angles, University of Southern California and New York University. During his career at CCHS, he taught English, Spanish, History and English as a Second Language. When he retired, the school dedicated a bench in the quad to him, but his retirement only lasted a year before he was back on campus as a ‘sub’ doing what he loved.
In addition to teaching, Zager loved to travel, and visited 90 countries. He was an avid square dancer, loved to cook, and attended the theater as often as possible. He was a patron of the Pantages, the Ahmanson, the Dolby, and the Mark Taper.
He also created a foundation in his family’s name to support scholarship, and presented this annually.
No official cause of death has been released. Services were held Thursday, July 6th at 1pm at Home of Peace Memorial Park and Mortuary 4334 Whittier Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90023
