All landlords of rental units in Culver City, including those with rental units that are exempt from rent control but receive tenant protections, must complete the annual registration process by the upcoming deadline of July 31, 2023.
Once registration has been completed using the Rental Unit Registration Portal, the landlord must pay the annual registration fee of $167 per residential unit. Landlords may be subject to additional fees and penalties for changes in rental property ownership, late payments and failure to register. Refunds are not issued at any time, including if there is a change in ownership or the rental unit is removed from the market.
Registration fee payments must be postmarked on or before the registration deadline of July 31, 2023. The City allows a grace period of 30 days beginning on August 1, 2023. The late payment process begins on September 1, 2023, during which a penalty fee of 20% will be added on the first day of each month (up to a maximum of 100%). The penalty fee is based on the total unpaid amount for registration and change-in-ownership fees, including those from the previous year.
Some properties may be considered exempt from this rental unit registration process, including:
Owner-occupied units, unless the exempt unit became rented
Vacant units with certification provided to the Housing and Human Services Department
If a landlord believes that their unit(s) are exempt from the registration requirements, they must submit an exemption request by July 31, 2023 to the Housing and Human Services Department before the registration deadline by emailing or calling (310) 253-5790.
