NCST’s Blanco Considers Failing Malls as Options for Mixed-Use/Housing

In our discussion of housing, many people don’t seem to be able to get past a black and white graphic of either/or, when in reality, there are many opportunities for both/and. Looking at the recent webinar from NCST, the National Council on Sustainable Transportation, (link below) can offer a more open view of what the future can look like.

The esteemed online publication The Planning Report links this December 2nd webinar presenting findings from a recent study of distressed malls in California’s metropolitan areas. Examining 10 case studies, Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington’s Department of Urban Design and Planning, Dr Hilda Blanco, assesses the potential for turning failing malls in California into mixed-use development, including housing.
