Higuera Street Bridge Construction Begins Sept. 20 – Bike Path Closed Through October

The current Higuera Street Bridge over Ballona Creek, immediately west of Jefferson Boulevard, will be demolished, and replaced with a new, wider bridge that will add 27 feet to the span along with additional  improvements. Construction will start on Monday, Sept. 20, 2021 and is expected to be completed by December of 2022.

Upgrades to the crossing will include additional northbound travel lanes, new bike lanes with lane line buffers, a new entrance bike ramp connection to Ballona Creek Bike Path, wider sidewalks, traffic signal upgrades at Jefferson Boulevard, new pavement and striping, as well as new retaining walls, landscaping and irrigation.

The bridge will be closed from today through December 2022. Most of the work will be between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, however, intermittent weekend work is also planned. Traffic will be detoured to National Boulevard, Hayden Avenue, Eastham Drive, and Jefferson Boulevard.

The Ballona Creek Bike Path will be closed from Sept. 20 2021 (that’s today!) to Oct. 15, 2021 during bridge demolition.

The project is funded by multiple grants, from the Federal Highway Bridget Program grant, the Proposition 84 grant from the Baldwin Hills Conservancy, the Metro Call for Projects grant and my local Culver City grant matches, including from Gas Tax, Measure R, and general funds.

  1. Bike Path closed for an entire month? Are you sure? Not intermittently as City Staff has previously described?

  2. Checking in with Public Works and waiting for specific dates – Current info from the city says the path will be closed through Oct. 15.
