Cold War Spaces Looks into Stasi Archives – June 30

In one of the early interviews of the Cold War Spaces series, Dagmar Hovestädt, the press speaker of the Stasi archives, spoke about the impact of the East German secret service on people’s lives in the GDR. This coming Wednesday, The Wende Museum’s curator Joes Segal will speak with acoustician and Professor of Science, Technology, and Modern Culture at Maastricht University (the Netherlands) Karin Bijsterveld about one specific aspect of the activities of the Stasi: their consistent but flawed attempts to develop a system of voice identification and sound recognition to track down “criminals,” an ever-expanding category in the GDR that included (alleged) political dissidents.

Wednesday, June 30, 12 p.m. PST: Karin Bijsterveld – Audio Space: Voice Identification and the Stasi
