With preliminary results showing a big lead over his closest rival, Issac Bryan is the projected winner of the race for the 54th Assembly District. Early returns show Bryan with 49.7% of the vote; he will need to clear 50% to avoid a runoff. That goal seems easily within reach as returns are still being tallied.
With almost twice as many votes as the closest contender, Heather Hutt, the scheduled runoff in July may be unneeded.
State Senator Sydney Kamlager endorsed Bryan, her former senior adviser for the position, and he collected many endorsements, including the Los Angeles Times and Congressmember Karen Bass.
Early totals for Hutt, a former Southern California district director for then-Senator Kamala Harris, showed at 24.3% of the votes. Running in third place was Cheryl C. Turner, with 10.6%. Turner is an attorney and a member of the state Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.
Voting closed yesterday, May 18, 2021, and the Los Angeles County Registrar will announce when the ballot tabulation is complete.
