Congressional Representative Karen Bass (D-CA) is endorsing Dr. Kelly Kent in her re-election bid for Culver City Unified School Board. “I know of no one in Culver City who will fight harder to ensure that every child has an opportunity to reach their full potential than Kelly Kent,” says Representative Bass. “She is the equity champion we truly need in these challenging times.”
Dr. Kent is seeking re-election to the school board, building upon her first-term agenda of equity, inclusion and advocacy for every student in the Culver City Unified School District. “CCUSD must put black and brown students, students with disabilities, English-learner students, homeless and foster care students, and students on free and reduced meals top of mind,” says Dr. Kent.
“Securing the endorsement of Representative Bass means the world to me,” continues Dr. Kent. “Not only does she represent Culver City in Congress, but she’s one of the most respected and beloved politicians in California. Her extensive Congressional resume includes five terms. It only takes one look at the Caucuses she’s involved with to see that her passions lie with educating our youth, particularly those who are traditionally underserved.” Bass is Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Founder and Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth, and a member of the following caucuses: Congressional Coalition on Adoption, American Sikh Congressional Caucus, Congressional Addiction, Treatment and Recover Caucus, the Coalition for Autism Research and Education (CARE), and the Congressional Caucus on Black Men and Boys.
“The COVID-19 era presents many challenges and even more opportunities for innovative ways to inspire CCUSD students,” adds Dr. Kent. In her second term, Dr. Kent seeks to reshape the curriculum to reflect the world to which CCUSD students feel most connected. This transformation will come with the rigor that accompanies high expectations for every student. “We must demand college and career readiness for 100% of our graduating class.”
“CCUSD must incorporate cultural proficiency into everything it does,” continues Dr. Kent, “starting with hiring. The most urgent need is in the form of hiring a diverse body of teachers and administrators who share the district’s values. We must also be able to retain our current exceptional personnel. Once staff has been identified that best reflects and celebrates the diversity of the CCUSD student body, we must keep them here with a range of incentives from financial to the endorsement of affinity groups and mentoring.”
Dr. Kent is supported by many past and present elected officials including Culver City Council Member and former Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells, who knows the value of continuity of service, particularly during a crisis. “Dr. Kelly Kent’s experience, track record, and deep commitment to our children are unparalleled. Her commitment to equity, opportunity, and racial justice in our community has helped move forward key policies that are more important than ever today. I entrust her with my own children’s education and proudly endorse her to continue her extraordinary leadership on the Culver City School Board.”
