Title 22 to Get Updated: Community Input on Oil Drilling Standards Needed

It’s a moment for a huge shift in energy usage, and so it is also a moment for a shift in perception and policy. How many people have dropped the commute completely? Left the car in the driveway? Or are you getting three weeks to the gallon, now that traffic has thinned out? The drop in consumption should lead to a big drop in production, and much better safety and health standards for Los Angeles County.

So far, that’s not what’s happening.

Los Angeles County’s Department of Regional Planning is in the process of updating its Title 22 Oil Well Ordinance for the first time in almost 40 years. This rule oversees oil drilling in most of unincorporated LA County, including our Inglewood Oil Field.  Numerous studies link close proximity to oil drilling sites with asthma, heart disease, cancer, and other illnesses. Right at this moment, that also reflects health impacts which greatly increase the risk of dying from Covid-19.

While many environmental groups and neighborhood associations have pushed for a 2500 foot set back, the current plan does not even come close. The County’s decision to recommend a 500 ft setback between new oil wells and homes, and grandfathering in existing wells, does not support the health data that show this amount of distance is unsafe.

Upcoming virtual meetings are planned, and public input will make a difference in how the law is finalized.

These virtual meetings are being held to provide the public with a summary of the Oil Well Ordinance and to provide an opportunity for the public to comment on the draft ordinance.
