While the city goes into a second day of departmental budget hearings, the opening session on May 18, 2020, included the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. Director Corey Lakin noted that it was “highly doubtful” the Fiesta La Ballona would take place on it’s usual weekend at the end of August.
It wasn’t about money; while the budget presentation was chiefly concerned with the financial matters, the question of pandemic preparedness loomed over every aspect. City Manager John Nachbar noted that “Fiesta is a budget neutral event, it doesn’t cost us, because of the sponsorships.”
Lakin pointed out that the last meeting of the Fiesta La Ballona Committee had been cancelled, and it would be up to the committee to make the decision.
Nachbar offered, “I just can’t see Fiesta happening in August. I just don’t see how that can happen. We are going to do everything that we can to support the community. It’s our hope that we can find ways to celebrate remotely until we can all come back together.”
The Fiesta La Ballona Committee is scheduled to meet on June 3, 2020 at 7 pm.
