Black Talkies is Back with “Orfeu Negro”

Proving that you cannot keep a good museum down, Black Talkies On Parade is back at a new location- West Los Angeles College – with the remarkably beautiful film Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro) on Saturday, February 29th @ 2:00 pm.

Black Talkies on Parade presents in the original Portuguese Language with English subtitles, the 1959 romantic tragedy film made in Brazil by French director Marcel Camus and starring Marpessa Dawn and Breno Mello. Young lovers Orfeu (Breno Mello) and Eurydice (Marpessa Dawn) run through the favelas of Rio during Carnaval, on the lam from a hitman dressed like Death (Ademar Da Silva) and Orfeu’s vengeful fiancée Mira (Lourdes de Oliveira) and passing between moments of fantasy and stark reality.

The impressionistic retelling of the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice introduced bossa nova to the world with its soundtrack by young Brazilian composers Luiz Bonfá and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Presented in partnership with West LA College, the afternoon will be hosted by MCLM Director, Lloyd Clayton
