CCUSD Winners @ Math Olympiad

Linwood E. Howe Elementary School recently hosted the e=mc2 Math Olympiads – a math tournament featuring more than 150 competitors from 30 schools from throughout the Los Angeles area.Lin Howe’s Reece Ford, pictured at left, and El Marino’s Rio Kawano each earned bronze medals in the competition.In the competition, each school entered a five-person team of fourth- or fifth-grade students to compete in a day of mathematically challenging problems in both team and individual events. The Farragut team is pictured below.“Our goal in organizing the tournament is to create an environment where girls and boys who enjoy the challenges of mathematics can be with others who feel the same way, hopefully stimulating them to pursue STEM careers (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics),” said Jason Frand, the tournament’s chairperson.Created in 1977 by Dr. George Lenchner, an internationally known math educator, the Math Olympiads went public in 1979. This year, nearly 170,000 students from 6,000 teams worldwide participated in the Olympiads. All 50 states and about 30 other countries were represented.
